Two people cooking to meal prep for the week

Meal prep has become increasingly popular in recent years, and for good reason. With busy schedules and limited time, it can be challenging to consistently eat healthy meals. However, by dedicating a small amount of time each week to meal prep, you can reap numerous benefits. Not only does meal prep make it easier to stick to a healthy eating plan, but it also saves time, money, and reduces food waste. In this blog post, we will provide you with tips and strategies to make meal-prepping efficient and enjoyable; and get you started on your meal prep journey.

As we said meal prepping is a highly effective way to save time and stay on track with your nutrition goals. By preparing your meals ahead of time, you can have healthy and delicious meals ready to go throughout the week. Here are the steps to follow for successful meal prepping:

Step 1: Plan your meals

Before you start meal prepping, it's important to plan out what you want to eat for the week. Consider your dietary goals, preferences, and any special dietary requirements. Look for inspiration from recipe books, online resources, or create your own meal ideas. Make a list of ingredients you'll need for each meal.

  • Alimac tip: I like to choose one recipe and make enough for every lunch of the week.

Step 2: Make a grocery list

Based on your meal plan, create a detailed grocery list with all the ingredients you'll need. Take into account portion sizes and make sure to include enough food for all your meals and snacks.

  • Alimac tip: Always check your pantry and fridge to make sure you what ingredients you already have and what you need to buy.

Step 3: Go grocery shopping

Head to the grocery store with your list in hand and gather all the ingredients you need.

Step 4: Set aside time for prepping

Choose a designated time in your schedule for meal prepping. This could be a few hours on the weekend or a weeknight when you have some free time. Make sure you have enough time to cook and assemble all your meals.

  • Alimac tip: I like to separate Sunday afternoons to meal prep, so that way I have everything ready for the week.

Step 5: Cook in bulk

Prepare large batches of your chosen recipes. This could involve cooking a large pot of grains, baking several chicken breasts, or sautéing a big batch of veggies. Cooking in bulk will save you time and allow you to portion out your meals easily.

Step 6: Portion out meals

Divide your cooked foods into individual meal-sized containers. Use containers that are microwave-safe for easy reheating.

  • Alimac tip: I like to use Ello Glass Containers to store my food, they are the perfect size and microwave-safe.

Step 7: Store properly

Place your portioned meals in the fridge or freezer, depending on when you plan to eat them. If you're prepping for the entire week, you may want to freeze some of your meals to maintain freshness.

Step 8: Reheating and enjoying

As the week progresses, simply grab a pre-portioned meal from the fridge or freezer and reheat when needed. This way, you'll have delicious and healthy meals ready to go, saving you time on those busy days.

By following these steps, you'll be well on your way to mastering the art of meal prepping and enjoying the benefits of having nutritious and convenient meals readily available. Remember, practice makes perfect, so don't be discouraged if it takes a few tries to find a routine that works best for you. Meal prepping can be a game-changer in simplifying your mealtime and promoting a healthier lifestyle.
